When Must I Apply for a Hong Kong Identity Card After Arriving?
- Published: 19 January 2026
Individuals permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days must apply for a Hong Kong Identity Card within 30 days of arrival. The application must be completed in person at a Registration of Persons Office, with appointments available online or via the Immigration Department’s mobile application.
Applicants must present their passport, valid visa, and where applicable, a birth certificate and proof of relationship for applicants under 18. A photo is taken during the appointment, and the standard processing time is approximately five working days.
Residents must register for an HKID at age 11 and carry it from age 15. Initial registration is free. Lost, damaged, or destroyed cards must be replaced within 14 days.
Note: This FAQ covers only the timing and procedural requirement; the full explanation of HKID types and functions remains in your dedicated HKID guide.
