How Does VAT Work for Drop-Shipping Businesses?
- Modified: 13 May 2026
VAT rules for drop-shipping can be complex and fact-specific.
Based on current HMRC interpretations:
- If you have a UK physical presence and sell from UK warehouse, normal VAT threshold rules apply.
- If you do not have a UK establishment but sell to UK customers, VAT registration is required.
- If you have no UK establishment and do not sell to UK customers, UK VAT may not apply.
However:
- Many online marketplaces require sellers to hold a UK VAT number.
- E-commerce turnover often grows quickly and can exceed the £90,000 threshold rapidly.
To avoid marketplace restrictions and compliance uncertainty, many UK-based drop-shipping businesses choose to register for VAT from the outset.
