What Do Company Shares Mean and What Is the Minimum Share Requirement?
- Published: 7 April 2026
Shares represent ownership in a company. When someone holds shares, they own a portion of the business and may receive dividends or voting rights depending on the company structure.
When incorporating a company with Companies House, at least one share must be issued. If there are multiple shareholders, each shareholder must hold at least one share.
Each share also has a nominal value (often £1 or £0.10), which represents the minimum value assigned to that share. For example:
- 100 shares at £1 each = £100 share capital.
- 1,000 shares at £0.10 each = £100 share capital.
Although both examples have the same total share capital, the number of shares affects how ownership can be distributed among shareholders.
