Do I Need to Pay the Data Protection Fee or Have Employers’ Liability Insurance?

  • Published: 7 April 2026

Some UK businesses must comply with additional regulatory requirements depending on how they operate.

If your company processes personal data, you may need to pay a data protection fee to the Information Commissioner's Office under the Data Protection (Charges and Information) Regulations 2018. Whether you must pay the fee depends on the type of data processing your business carries out. Businesses can complete a self-assessment through the ICO website to determine whether the fee applies.

If your company employs staff, you are also legally required to obtain Employers’ Liability Insurance. The policy must provide coverage of at least £5 million and must be issued by an authorised insurer.

At present, Osome does not arrange data protection fee payments or employers’ liability insurance policies. Businesses must register and arrange these requirements directly with the relevant providers.
