Do Non-Resident Companies Need to Register for VAT in the UK?
- Published: 7 April 2026
Non-resident companies can open a UK business, but they may need to register for VAT immediately, depending on how their business operates.
If your business is based outside the UK but sells goods within the UK, you usually need to register for VAT from the start. In these cases, the normal VAT registration threshold does not apply to overseas sellers.
Similarly, if your company stores goods in the UK and sells them to customers abroad, including within the EU, VAT registration may also be required from the outset.
Because VAT obligations depend on factors such as where goods are stored, where they are sold, and how the supply chain operates, it is important to review your business activities before trading to determine whether VAT registration is required.
